The Great Lakes of America provide us with the perfect fly drive route. During this 2 week itinerary you'll take in iconic cities, sandy beaches, national parks, picturesque villages, un spoilt natural lakes & mountains and plenty of wildlife all at a gentle pace.

Ideal between May & October. We'll recommend the properties we feel are in good locations along the route, most will be 4* and we'll suggest a suitable sized car to accommodate you family.

Full Itinerary - The Great Lakes america Fly Drive

 

Days 1 & 2 Chicago.

Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Chicago. Upon arrival, collect your rental car and proceed to your hotel. Enjoy Chicago’s restaurants, stroll along the shore of Lake Michigan or sample live music at a jazz or blues club. Chicago is undoubtedly one of the worlds greatest cities, so we’ve allowed a full day for you to explore. Take one of the elevators up Willis Tower for a birds eye view of the amazing skyscrapers and across the lake, and wonder along the beautiful lakefront which is almost entirely devoted to recreation and relaxation. Michigan Avenue, also known as the Magnificent Mile promises some of the East coasts best shopping opportunities.

Days 3 & 4 Saugatuck - Lake Michigan (142 miles)

Today’s journey to Saugatuck, takes you through the southern Michigan beach area. Your accommodation for the next two nights is in Saugatuck, known along with its neighbouring town of Douglas as the Art Coast of Michigan. Dune rides, golfing, boat cruises and hiking can all be enjoyed here. Sitting on the shores of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck is a place of serene beauty, which also boasts unique shops and fine dining. Travel 20 minutes north and experience the Dutch heritage in Holland, boasting Dutch archietecture, culture, tulip and windmill gardens and even a wooden shoe

Days 5 & 6 Mackinac Island - North of Lake Michigan (269 miles) 

Make an early start today, travelling north along the coast of Lake Michigan. En route we suggest a visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes; a beautiful park which covers 35-miles of Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline. Leaving your car at Mackinaw City, the ferry carries you on a 20 minute high-speed journey to Mackinac Island. An island of under four square miles, horse-drawn carriages and bicycles are the delightful modes of transport.On the 2nd day we suggest you  explore this quaint and idyllic island. Enjoy a self-guided tour by bike or on foot and see the varied sights which include Arch Rock, Skull Cave, British Landing and Devil’s Kitchen. Be sure to sample the island’s famous fudge during your stay.

Days 7 Marquette - Lake Superior (167 miles) 

Leaving Mackinac Island behind, collect your car from Mackinaw City and enjoy a scenic drive to Marquette, which is the largest city on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. After spending an afternoon exploring the city, we suggest sampling the European and Scandinavian cuisines for dinner

Days 8  & 9 Bayfield - Lake Superior (207 miles)

Today, drive across the Upper Peninsula, to Wisconsin. The Upper Peninsula is encased to the north by Lake Superior, to the east by the St. Mary’s River, to the southeast by both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and to the southwest by Wisconsin. Its extensive coastline on the Great Lakes, state and national forests, cedar swamps, and more than 150 waterfalls make it a hub for boating, fishing and hiking. Your accommodation for the next two nights will be in the beautiful lakeside town of Bayfield. A small town with plenty to see and do, Bayfield serves as the gateway to the Apostle Island National Lakeshore, a National Park that includes 21 beautiful islands and over 12 miles of scenic peninsula shoreline. Today is yours to relax and enjoy the picture-postcard surroundings

Days 10 & 11  Spring Green (339 miles) 

A long but scenic drive brings you to Spring Green where you may choose to spend the afternoon relaxing, or venture into the village to explore the many art galleries and shops. Spring Green is synonymous with Frank Lloyd Wright, one of America’s premier architects who considered it his home. Visit the Taliesin Estate, which he created and built to be both beautiful and inspirational. Next we suggest you head to House on the Rock, showcasing room after room of some of the world’s most eclectic collections.

Day 12 & 13 Ephraim - Lake Michigan / Door County (241 miles)

This morning travel to Door County, a 75-mile long peninsula with over 300 miles of shoreline, five state parks and ten lighthouses. Your accommodation for the next two nights will be in Ephraim; a quaint village where shops and galleries are set in century-old barns, rustic log cabins and vintage homes. On your 2nd day here we suggest you spend the day browsing one-of-a-kind shops, galleries, museums and lighthouses. Water lovers can head out on the water. Charter a boat for a fishing expedition, enjoy a sailboat tour, take out a kayak, have fun on a jet ski or how about a scuba dive!

Day 14  Milwaukee - Lake Michigan (181 miles)

It’s back to the bright lights of the city, as you wind your way to Milwaukee. A very special place, why not start by exploring the beautiful Milwaukee Riverwalk, Milwaukee Art Museum and the Harley Davidson Museum.

Day 15  Fly home from Chicago to Heathrow (79 miles)
