One of the most scenic and historic fly drives you could experience. Start in Washington following the Sky line trail through Virginia onto Appalachian trail connecting to the Blue Ridge trail down into north Carolina ending at The Great Smoky Mountains. There are great trails, hikes, ziplines, cycling paths and lakes for the adventurous along this route. The small inns & bed and breakfast reflect this scenic area - beautiful from spring through to the fall in September/October.

Full Itinerary - Skyline & Blue Ridge Parkway
Days 1 & 2 Washington
Start your Skyline & Blue Ridge Parkway trip by flying directly into Washington, the destination for the first 2 nights or 1 full day of your exciting adventure. Two nights in Washington essentially affords you a day and a half in Washington to sightsee and sightseeing doesn't get more impressive that The White House, pre book a trip to the Washington Monument for great view of the city or visit the old Post Office Pavillion where you can walk to the top of the tower of the old clock tower for free ! There are so many museums in Washington but I'd recommend The Smithsonian Museum, again its free and you can wander for as long as you like. try to include a walk along the Potomac River and Georgetown for designer shopping, boutiques and fabulous restaurants.

Days 3 & 4 Shenandoah National Park - Luray (97 miles)
Collect your rental car and take a 90 minutes drive east out into the countryside and The Shenandoah National Park and the charming village of Luray, you home for the next 2 nights. Straddling Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park includes 75 overlooks for motorists, 500 miles of trails for hikers, hundreds of caves and several dramatic waterfalls. What ever you do bring your camera. The Luray Caverns have become the most popular in Eastern America. Guided tours lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high. Enormous chambers are filled with towering columns, shimmering draperies and crystal-clear pools. We suggest you stay at The Skyland Resort but If you have extra time you may want to consider extending your stay here.

Days 5 to 6 Skyline & Appalachian Trail (82 miles)
Following the Skyline trail through stunning wooded countryside continue onto Waynesboro ideally in time for lunch. Spend your time in this pedestrian friendly town, visit the museums, fisheries and wonderful restaurants its a beautifully picturesque village. Spend the next 2 nights here or day and a half hiking, golfing, canoeing, horse riding, wine tasting, fishing or just wandering around this beautiful area. There is so much to do in this picturesque part of the world - you might want to extend the number of nights you have here if you have the time.

Days 7 & 8 Blue Ridge Mountains (260 miles)
The Blue Ridge Parkway is littered with beautiful village that all have a musical connection. Make a stop at Malby Mill one of the most photographed places in the US. Meander the paved path leading to the water-powered gristmill; visit the restored sawmill, woodworking shop, and blacksmith shop. . Its a worth while stop to hike the Rock Castle Gorge Recreational Trail a strenuous and rugged trail that plunges three miles into the gorge then ascends seven miles back out on the return trail. Entire loop is 10.8 miles; elevations range from 1,700 to 3,572 ft. If you have the time a stop in the town of Roanoke its full of restaurants, bars, music venues, wineries and surrounded by lakes, trails to hike or cycle and beautiful scenery.

Days 9, 10 & 11 Gatlinburg & Smoky Mountains National Park (165 miles)
Crossing the Great smoky mountains and head to Gatlinburg. The Smoky mountains are enough to keep you walking and amused for days, cycling, ziplining, white water rafting are just some of the activities on offer but the town of Gatlinburg is the real gateway town and a must see. Allocate some time in Chimney Rock Park and if you have the extra time a visit to Pigeon Forge and Dollywood is a fun day out whilst you are in the area.

Day 12 ,13 & 14 Atlanta or Nashville (aprox 250 miles to either)
Atlanta is a lovely city benefiting from a clean airy feel to it, lots of green spaces and a warm year round climate. We suggest you visit The Martin Luther King Memorial. The Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta's world of Coca Cola and The CNN studios both of which are excellent tours. If you like good food and shopping then Poncey's City Market and The Lenox Square Simon Mall in the Buckhead district are both musts.
Nashville is a city of music, spend your days learning the history of the music scene in the various museums and your evenings moving from bar to bar along "Broadway" listening the up and coming musicians - each bar promotes the type of music it favour's, sometimes country, sometimes rock, sometimes pop. The Country Hall of Music and the RC Studio Tour are musts, whilst the Johnny Cash museum and the Ryman Auditoriums are well worth the visit.
Day 15 Fly home from your final destination be it Atlanta or Nashville to UK
British Airway now operate a direct flight back to Heathrow from Nashville and Atlanta. Both flights are overnight flights landing the following morning in to the UK. There are options to the regional airports in the UK , all with require a change of plane enroute to your final destination
