"The People of Hawaii would like to share their islands with you"
Initially, the first thing to say about a holiday to the Hawaiian Islands is that you need to give as much thought to deciding which of the Hawaiian island's you would like to visit as you would if you were deciding to spend you holiday in the wilds of Scotland, a week in Brighton, a week in London or a week at Lands End in Cornwall as they are all very different and commercialised to a different extent.
FLIGHTS
Firstly the flights - All flights from the UK to Hawaii are reasonably frequent and are operated by several different airlines, the quickest and most direct routes all depart from London Heathrow. Flights from the UK touch down on the West Coast of the USA stopping in either Los Angeles, San Francisco or Las Vegas, because of the distance there aren't any none stop flights direct to the Hawaiian Islands, this leg of your journey will take 12 hours. From here you'll then need to change planes and connect with a flight that takes you to your chosen Hawaiian Island, this second leg of your journey will take approximately 6½ hours, and of course the same applies to your return flight.
STOPPING OVER ON ROUTE
Some people prefer to fly straight from the UK to Hawaii, transiting in California or Nevada, where as others prefer to break the journey stopping over on the West Coast, to catch up on sleep and to see a little of San Francisco, Los Angeles or Las Vegas.
Having flown with and with out the stops, if time allows we would suggest you opt to break the journey on the return portion of the journey if not the outbound for several reasons,
- The time difference and the long flight is extremely tiring and most people find that once they return they suffer from jet lag for at least a week .
- Also the scheduling of the flights on the return portion of the holiday, from the Hawaiian Islands back to the West Coast of America, don’t have a good connection requiring a wait of up to 6/7 hours.
Having completed this journey many times in my life I prefer not to stop on mainland USA on the return and just get home, stopping on the mainland cuts short your time in Hawaii - as you will appreciate it’s all a matter of personal taste.
CAR HIRE
As all the islands are so different you won’t be surprised to read that car hire differs from island to island. Generally speaking parking is difficult on the island of Oahu and the roads rather busy so if you can make use of taxi’s and public transport you will be well advised. However, on the less busy islands of Maui, Hawaii and Kauai car hire is recommend, these islands are larger in and less commercialised in comparison so exploring can work out expensive by taxi, most hotels offer car hire facilities so hiring a car on the days you want to explore is cost benefical.
